Adaptation or Plasticity?

Reading

An article on the difference between evolutionary adaptation and phenotypic plasticity. This article by the University of California Museum of Paleontology and the National Center for Science Education highlights various factors, such as natural selection and developmental changes amongst others, which play a role in determining how organisms respond to a changing environment and climate.

Students will be introduced to behavioural, morphological, and genetic changes that occur on spatial as well as temporal scales as plants and animals adjust to their environments, particularly in the context of a warming planet.

Use this tool to help your students find answers to:

  1. What is phenotypic plasticity?
  2. How do changes in climatic conditions affect the growth, physiology and behavior of organisms? Give
    examples.
  3. All organisms are capable of adapting to climate change. State whether the statement is true or false and give an example to support your answer.
