Climate solutions and the Role of Women

Video

A video playlist titled ‘CS – Drawdown – 4 – Women and Girls’ from the ‘Murtugudde Climate Academy’ by Dr. Raghu Murtugudde. It consists of 3 short video lectures that summarise climate solutions from a Gender perspective, specifically, the role of women in climate mitigation and resilience. The solutions are based on the book titled ‘Drawdown’ edited by Paul Hawken.

The video lectures are as follows:

  1. Women and Girls (9:46 mins): The video shares a comparison of female population and sex ratio in the developed and developing countries. It mentions the measures to be taken to encourage participation of women in agriculture and assure them a fair share and equanimity in the occupation. The video also states that the yield per plot can potentially increase by 26%, if women’s access to finance and resources comes closer to parity with men’s.
  2. Family Planning (13:22 mins): This video discusses the issue of family planning- a subject that is critical in many places around the world in context to population growth and climate change. It also mentions that as the rate of women’s education increases, there is a steady drop in the number of children per woman.
  3. Educating Girls (9.33 mins): This video discusses the importance of women’s education for climate mitigation. It states that educated women can fuse traditional knowledge with new information and techniques and thus gain abilities to sustain themselves and those who depend on them. The video mentions that educated girls and women have a better capacity to cope with shocks from natural disasters and extreme weather events.

Students will be introduced to the role of women and girls in climate mitigation and resilience. They will learn about the importance of family planning, women’s education and the measures to be adopted to ensure equal participation and partnership of women in agriculture and related occupations. They will also learn about the impact of girls’ and women’s education on reduction in carbon emissions.
